Graduating Seniors, It's Your Time to Shine

A photography style list for up and coming Seniors and their parents

A few weeks ago I came across an article I found interesting as a photographer. A teenager had her senior photograph for the school yearbook rejected by the school because they felt her clothing choice was too reveling and inappropriate. This really got me thinking about what I would do as a photographer to help guide a great session that appeals to all parties involved (teen, parents & school selection committee).

Most high schools give their final year student the option to use their own special photograph for their last yearbook. This popular tradition started around the 1980s when seniors decided to seek out a professional photographer or outside studio to take those last milestone photographs instead of the school's "picture day" photographs. This tradition has continued to grow in popularity today with a booming market of senior photographers.

I personally love photographing teenagers. I recall my own experience as a shy teen back in 1996 where the photographer made me feel like a supermodel for the day. I never felt so pretty and glamorous. I try in my profession to give young adults that same great confident feeling.

That being said I know my job is not only to please the senior, but also the parent. Therefore, prior to your session, I suggest the following tips in styling your shoot so you can create classic and timeless photos that will keep you from saying, "What was I thinking?"

1) "Pin" inspiration. Pinterest.com offers many examples of photographs, clothing, poses, and hairstyles. Use it to "pin" your favorite photos that show your personality and style. You can then show that pin board to your parents prior to shopping or to your photographer to better get to know you and your needs. Your photographer may even have Pin boards as well that you can look through for ideas. I love using Pinterest to find inspiration and guide ALL my clients shoot. (You can follow me here)
2)  Think to yourself - "Will I still think this is cool ten years from now?" Sure you may love that over the top trend today, but is that the image you want to keep forever? Keep it simple; jeans, cute boots, a natural dress, and not to many busy prints or bright colors. Timeless style that always stays cool.
3) Let the photography speak. A great photographer can rock an image regardless as to what you show up dressed in. My favorite images don’t even focus on clothing; but on eyes, hair, face and backdrop. Sunlight used as a catch light in the eyes or back-lit on your hair are far prettier then any dress. Personally, I think shots like this really show your real personality.
4) What are you into? Hobbies, sports, music and television all tell a story about who you are. Use these elements in your session. Have pre-consultations with your photographer and make sure they understands some of the things you enjoy. Some may even have you fill in a question and answer form prior to your session, as I do with all my seniors.
5) Most of all - have fun, be relaxed, and stay true to you. You only get this moment in your life once.
