Bonney Lake, WA— East Pierce Fire and Rescue is looking for volunteer firefighters. Applications will be accepted through September 16. An orientation meeting for volunteer candidates is scheduled for September 19.
“Volunteers help enhance our response to fire and medical emergency calls as well as assist with public education,” says Assistant Chief Ed Goodlet. They respond to 9-1-1 emergencies from outlying stations and when the career firefighters are busy with a significant number of calls or a large-scale emergency.
“Volunteers provide an important service by putting trained people in the community, particularly in outlying areas of the District,” Goodlet says. For some, it also provides a transition to a career in the fire service. Many of the current career firefighters at East Pierce have been hired from the volunteer ranks.
To join, volunteers must be 18 years or older, possess a high school diploma or GED and have a valid Washington State driver’s license, with an acceptable driving record. Volunteers must also live within the East Pierce Fire District boundaries; an area that covers from Edgewood and Milton to Wilkeson. Following a written test and interview process, the volunteer candidates will need to pass a rigorous physical. A background check will also be conducted.
Those selected will attend a firefighter academy and classes to become emergency medical technicians (EMTs).
The fire district is also accepting applications for lateral residents. These are individuals who have already met the requirements of a volunteer firefighter, either with East Pierce or another fire department, and who will reside at a volunteer fire station. In addition to the volunteer requirements, residents be 19 years or older, possess a State of Washington Certification of Competency Firefighter I or equivalent upon application, Washington State EMT-B certification upon application, proof of Health Care Provider CPR certification, department approved driver/operator training program upon application, and the ability to comply with the Resident Program Manual and Resident Agreement.
