Dan and Melanie Roach Host "Tumble for Autism" Fundraiser Sunday

"Tumble for Autism" supports the Washington Autism Alliance and Advocacy.

Dan and Melanie Roach are hosting a fundraiser Sunday at Roach Gymnastics in support of Washington Autism Alliance and Advocacy’s family and individual support programs.

Join WAAA and Roach Gymnastics for three hours of fun in the 22,000 square foot facility packed with real gymnastics equipment, supervised by Roach Gymnastics staff!  This is an “Open Gym” format.

Dan Roach is a former State Legislator who currently sits on the Pierce County Council, while Melanie is an Olympic weightlifter and successful business woman.

Elected in 2010, Dan currently represents the communities of east Pierce County. Prior to his time on the Council, Dan served five terms in the State House of Representatives.

Melanie began lifting weights after an injury put her promising gymnastics career on hold. After winning a bronze medal in the 1994 American Open, Melanie went on to break the world record in the clean and jerk at the 1998 US National Championships. After founding Roach Gymnastics, Melanie retuned to competition, winning bronze at the Pan Am Games in Brazil, placing 6th in her weight class at the 2008 US Olympics in Beijing, and securing two more National Championships.

But even with the successes they have enjoyed in their careers, they acknowledge the challenges, struggles and triumphs of raising a child with autism. Says Melanie “I’m more balanced, having the challenges of raising a family and running a business, and having an Autistic child. Weightlifting is the easiest part of my day.”

“We understand the need and the struggles families face first-hand as one of our children has autism,” the Roaches note. “We thank Washington Autism Alliance & Advocacy for all the organization is doing for families and children with autism. We encourage you to all join this event in support of WAAA.”

This event is open to all – those affected by autism and those who wish to support family members or friends affected by autism.

All donations are tax exempt and will go directly to programs that provide critical support for families and individuals who are affected by Autism.

The event takes place from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, April 28 at Roach Gymnastics (1627 45th Street E., in Sumner).
