Great Escape: The Fair Isn't Just for Kids

You might think that Doin’ the Puyallup is an annual event for kids,  but if you’ve limited your fair experience to that, you’re missing out.  It might be telling that this year’s fair theme is “Make Your Escape.”

Escape the uber-technical environment to which we’ve become accustomed, and venture off to the fair with a new agenda. Step back into a time when all foods were harvested off the land and animals had a purpose other than to be called Fido.

Spending time talking with the farmers and agriculturally-informed people can be a great education. Chat with dairy farmers about where our milk travels from and how to get it at its freshest. Talk to the 4-H kids about the efforts of raising their swine before being offered to place a bid on its head.

Bring a camera and invest the time and energy into the American past time that is state and regional fairs. It’s far more than elephant ears, corn dogs and roller coasters.
