For Wee Readers, ages 0-3, the library encourages parents and caregivers to read with their children. The little ones will count in their reading log for every day they read or visit a library with their parent or caregiver. When children complete the reading log, they can earn a reading prize at the library.

With the “One World, Many Stories” theme, the library will work with children, ages 3-12, and bring them a world of fun, free events including magical imaginary journeys, animal tales, and crafts and treasures. When kids read 20 minutes a day, for a total of 10 hours, they will earn a prize, which includes a free pass to Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium or Northwest Trek, while supplies last.

During teen summer reading, “You are Here,” teenagers will make books, jewelry, buttons and musical instruments, and decorate cakes, shoes and T-shirts. For every 10 hours teens read, they may enter a drawing to win gift cards and other prizes, provided by Pierce County Library Foundation.

More children participate in public library summer reading programs than play Little League baseball. A recent study by Dominican University found that students who take part in their local library’s summer reading program significantly improve their reading skills. Instead of losing knowledge and skills during the summer months, kids who attend reading programs actually show gains.

Registration may be required for some events; contact libraries for details. Rotaries of Pierce County are the primary sponsor for Pierce County Library’s Summer Reading program, along with donations to Pierce County Library Foundation and Friends of the Libraries.
