"Party In The Dirt" Makes This Year's Fair One to Remember

Rodeo festivities include dancing in the dirt to country band and learning tips firsthand from the pros.

Along with scones, rides and animals, another activity that has been around for decades at the Puyallup Fair is the rodeo.

But this year’s event will feature something special for adults. After the rodeo and concert Saturday night, for $20 -- $17 in advance -- participants can dance in the dirt to the country band Ricochet, and get rodeo tips from the pro cowboys and bull riders, along with food and light refreshments.

This year’s rodeo has a purse of $540,000, making it the largest rodeo in the Pacific Northwest.  The rodeo is Sept. Friday through Sunday, the first three days of the Puyallup Fair, which runs from Friday through Sept. 25.

Because of the high stakes, some of the finest cowboys and stock are expected. As always, the rodeo will feature bull riding, bareback riding, tie-down roping, team roping, steer wrestling, saddle bronc riding and barrel racing.

The first rodeo begins at 1 p.m. Friday, followed by another rodeo at 6:30 p.m.

Grammy-nominated country singer Joe Nichols will perform following the evening rodeo performance. Nichols brings the traditional side of country music to life with his rich baritone sound through hit songs such as “Gimmie That Girl,” “Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off,” or “What’s a Guy Gotta Do.”  The concert is included in the price of the rodeo ticket. Tickets are available for $35. All seats are reserved.

Saturday’s events include rodeo performances at 1 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Following the evening rodeo is a performance by the country band Ricochet.

A special event, the Party in the Dirt, will follow for those 21 and older.

The finals of the rodeo will take place at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Tickets are available at www.thefair.com or at Puyallup Fair Box office outlets and include fair gate admission when purchased in advance.

The Puyallup Fair started in 1900, and is one of the biggest fairs in the world, and the largest in the Northwest. A star-studded concert lineup, the PRCA Rodeo, rides, exhibits, food and animals are mainstays of the 17-day event each September.
