Summer Food Programs to Start up in Bonney Lake

But Sumner will have only 1 such program, at Daffodil Elementary

People in need will have six locations in Bonney Lake to receive free meals this summer, but only one in Sumner.

Bonney Lake Community Resources will serve lunch and some suppers at five community park locations in Bonney Lake starting June 22.

However, in Sumner, the only such resource will be a lunch at Daffodil Elementary Monday through Friday, put on by the Sumner School District for those 18 and younger. The district also will sponsor a lunch in Bonney Lake, at Liberty Ridge Elementary. Those meals start June 27.

“Hunger does not end at the last school bell,” a news release from Stew Bowen at Bonney Lake Community Resources says. “Many of our kids need food throughout the summer to combat hunger in their lives.”

The release says the organization works with businesses, clubs, other nonprofits, community members and volunteers, to help stop hunger. However, Bowen says more help is needed. If you would like to volunteer, contact Bowen at stew@teamblcr.us or call 253-208-6779. For more information on the summer meals program, visit http://teamblcr.us/meals.html.

Anita Miller, acting director for the Sumner Food Bank, said Thursday that the nonprofit is not planning a summer program this year. It has tried programs the past two summers without success, she said.

The food bank operates a successful backpack program during the school year, where is takes meals to schools, which give them to those in need. They plan to research best practices for summer meal programs so when a new director is hired they will be ready next summer. Miller said they may end up serving meals at the food bank or at some parks.

“I know there are little kids who need it,” Miller said.
