"Baron of Barbeque" to Host Pit Master Class at Branks BBQ in Sumner

Join Paul Kirk, the Kansas City Baron of Barbeque, at a special class on barbeque techniques this Sunday at Branks BBQ in Sumner.

Just in time for spring, Chef Paul Kirk, the "Kansas City Baron of Barbeque," will host a special master pit barbeque class this Sunday, April 22 at in Sumner.

The class is $170 per person and well worth it, according to Branks BBQ owner Charlie Brank. In an interview with The News Tribune, Branks said he was inspired to open his Sumner restaurant back in 1995 after taking Kirk's class. Branks is co-author of Kirk's BBQ book "Championship BBQ."

According to his website, Kirk is the seven-time World Champion of BBQ and has won nearly 475 cooking awards.

The class will cover barbequing basics for cooking brisket, pork butt, pork ribs, chicken and sausage. He also covers fire management, fuel, rubs, spices, presentation and more. Branks will provide the meat. The class is for professionals and hobbyists alike.

Sunday's crash course in BBQ begins at 6 a.m. and ends at 8 p.m. Class size is limited to 40 people.
