Five Tips for Going Green This Valentine's Day

Show some love for Mother Earth—and your wallet—by cutting down on waste and making homemade gifts this Valentine's Day.

Roses are red, and violets are blue, but your Valentine's Day can be green with a little bit of effort and resourcefulness.

Here are some tips, based on suggestions from Waste Management:

  • Cards: Save paper by sending an e-card or making a paper card with recycled materials. If you need to stock up on craft supplies like glue and glitter, head to Ben Franklin Crafts and Frameshop.
  • Flowers: Consider buying your Valentine a tree or small plant that can be added to the garden. Check out the selections at Amanda's Flowers & Gifts, VanLierop Garden Market or Woodland Park Greenhouse to get started.
  • Jewelry: Instead of shelling out tons of cash for a new necklace or earings, why not pick out an heirloom piece from a vintage dealer or second-hand boutique like BB's Closet in Alley on Main or A Picket Fence?
  • Food: Forego the expensive dinner out, and instead opt to cook a romantic feast at home with your Valentine. Stop by Tacoma Boys in Puyallup or Marlene's in Federal Way or Tacoma to pick up local and organic ingredients for your special meal.
  • Other homemade gifts: Celebrate special memories with your loved one by creating an electronic photo album or playlist of your favorite songs. You could also use recycled materials to make a scrapbook or homemade picture frame.
