Sumner Wine Walk: Never Underestimate the Power of Wine

Through the streets of Sumner on Saturday the rain blew sideways, yet the sidewalks were filled with people happy to be there.

The Sumner Downtown Association Wine Walk was a success, even with the weather. The morning looked promising, but held the looming forecast of rain. As the 3:30 p.m. start time approached, so did the dark clouds. By 4 p.m. the rains came, along with wind gusts strong enough to blow umbrellas inside out and skirts uncomfortably high (which you will have to take my word for!)

Leaves cycloned up into the air above our heads, along with an occasional gum wrapper or lost receipt. Since Sumner sidewalks are very clean, these were obviously only minutes old ... because they were still dry! Still, one thing was sure not to be seen flying through the air -- wine tickets.

Upon arrival, I was given my Passport of Wines with six tickets, each for a 1-ounce pour of wine from local businesses. Who would stand in six lines to receive 6 ounces of wine? Hundreds would! It was all about the fun, being with friends and neighbors and coming together to experience businesses in a different way. Each year the wine walk brings a different life to the small, quiet downtown we all love.

No one complained about the lines or the rain or the wind. The only complaint to be heard, "I only have one more ticket and I haven't even gotten to the Attic." No worries, more tickets were available to purchase.

, of course, is the beautiful ballroom above and The , where the cool Patch table was located. Our table was in line with many tables manned by other local businesses who also lacked a storefront on Sumner's Main Street. The room was full during the entire run of the Wine Walk.

It could have been a great escape from the rain, but I'd like to think it was the fantastic people pouring the Castle Rock wine over the green tablecloth reading P-a-t-c-h. I hear our editor Lauren and calendar editor/cohort Michael did a fabulous job! I'd like to say I felt bad for not having the legal ability to pour wine, therefore being forced to participate in the event, but I never lie!

The dampness of our hair and clothing did not seem to dampen the spirits of anyone involved and the 7:30 p.m. closing time came too soon for many, hubby and I included. I am sure we are not alone when looking forward to the next History Mystery Wine Walk, Saturday, Sept. 10, 4-8 p.m. in downtown Sumner. See you there!
