What Happens to the Liquor Stores After Next Week?

State-run liquor stores, including the Sumner and Bonney Lake locations, are closing next week and plan to re-open as private liquor retailers in June.

If you’re worried about where to buy liquor after the , fear not – the Bonney Lake location will open as a private store as soon as possible, said Suneet Diwan, the store's new owner.

Wednesday is the last day of business for the state-run facility then Diwan gets the keys at 8 a.m. on June 1.

"It might be a little hectic and we might be using iPads for credit card purchases until our systems get up to speed, but we plan to open on June 1. June 2 at the latest," said Diwan. He purchased the location in the state auction for $200,100.

Diwan plans to expand the store's product line to include more beer and wine selections, with future plans for special promotions.

All six of the Bonney Lake liquor store employees were offered positions. Two employees -- possibly three -- accepted, said Diwan. He also hired one person from the Sumner liquor store location.

At Sumner’s liquor store, Saturday, May 26 is the last day of business. Employee Goe White told Patch that the location’s new owner plans to reopen the facility some time in June. Only one of five employees was offered a job in the new store. The liquor store’s new owners purchased the facility for $130,100 in the state auction.

The new owner of the Sumner liquor store location could not be reached for comment at time of publication.
