College Football Starts this Week!

The College season kicks off Thursday at 3 PM.

I have been waiting to watch a football game that counts since the Super Bowl ended on Feb. 6, 2011. It has been almost seven months with no football, unless you count the NFL pre-season.  After watching the last three Seahawks pre-season games and seeing no offensive line, QB's getting sacked liked tackling dummies and no defender that can cover a wide receiver in the secondary.  It is shaping up to be a long NFL season, so bring on college football.

The college football season kicks off Thursday with 78 games in a five day time span.  With a bulk of those games being played this Saturday.  A person could watch football games from 9 AM-10 PM on Saturday if they wanted.  With the ability to watch multiple games through out the day. I will admit that I try to catch as many games as I can during opening weekend.

I love opening weekend; it is the next best thing next to the college bowl season.  The first few weeks are usually out of conference games, with the bigger schools beating up on the little ones.  The excitement comes with two minutes left in a game and a little school is about to take down a bigger one.  Who doesn't cheer for an underdog?

College football has always had a different feel then the NFL.  You don't have over paid millionaires playing the game. Instead you have players that can only dream of playing in the NFL, with such a small percentage of those who actually will.  Almost every state has a NCAA Division 1-A College football team to follow.  With a college team you don't have to worry about them relocating to another city or trading away your favorite player.

One of the best things about college football is the rivalries.  Of course in Washington we have UW and WSU but there are the big name rivalries that are just as good to watch: Notre Dame/USC, Army/Navy, Auburn/Alabama or LSU/Florida.  Not to mention the rivalry jokes that come out each year. (How do you make a WSU football player laugh on Saturday?  Tell him a joke on Wednesday)

To all the College football fans enjoy opening weekend and may your favorite team make it to a bowl game this season.
