Monday Morning Quarterback

A look at the Seahawks/Niners game.

The Seahawks got their first regular season game under their belt Sunday with a 33-17 loss to San Francisco.  When you look at the stats, the Seahawks led in first downs, total yards, fewer penalties, more plays and were better on third-down conversions.  The two stats that contributed to the Niners' win were the Seahawks' three turnovers and the Niners' two kick returns for touchdowns.

I was not happy with the offensive play calls in the first half.  I thought they would have opened it up more with slant passes or by throwing downfield.  It did not help Michael Robinson going out early in the game with an ankle injury.

Tarvaris Jackson's performance was just okay.  I got tired of watching him throw off his back foot; he needs to step into his throws.  He also needs to get the ball out quicker with pressure coming.  I can't blame the offensive line for all five of the sacks.  Jackson held onto the ball too long.  He needs to pick up on the pressure sooner, scramble out of the pocket or throw the ball away.  Jackson had one fumble and two interceptions.  His second interception was at the end of the first half when he threw up a Hail Mary pass which was picked by the Niners' Tramaine Brock.

The offensive line was a little better then what I thought it would be.  It was nice to see Russell Okung start the game.  They have to work on creating openings for the running game. The Seahawks had only 64 yards rushing with an average 2.9 yards per carry.  That kind of average is not going to win you ball games, especially when your passing game is not much better.   Tarvaris Jackson is going to need better pass protection in order to throw the ball deep.

The Seahawks' defense had good stops but got dinged with penalties that kept drives alive for the Niners.  The secondary didn't get hurt too bad; again, some pass interference calls hurt.  I thought Aaron Curry had a good game, but then this is a make-or-break season for him.

The one thing I thought I did not have to worry about was special teams.  It looks like they need some work, with giving up two kick returns for touchdowns.  One of my favorite comments from Pete Carroll's press conference after the game was on the special teams giving up the two touchdowns: "I think we missed some tackles."

Thank you for stating the obvious, Coach Carroll.

The Seahawks will travel to Pittsburgh to take on the Steelers next week. The Steelers looked bad in their opener against the Ravens.  This could be a really ugly game for the Seahawks' offense since the Steelers have a better defense then the Niners.  There is the problem with traveling to the East Coast and time-zone change.  The Seahawks have always had trouble with these early games.
