5. , July 17: Three young adults exploring Victor Falls found themselves in a frightening situation when one of them slipped and fell. The following complicated high-angle rescue, performed by East Pierce firefighters, was the most dramatic manuever captured in photos this year. Luckily, there were no injuries.

4. , Oct. 25: After a year of struggle between the city of Sumner, local enviornment groups and county planners, the Pierce County Council gave the official green light to the Orton Junction project, a mixed-use development that will raze local farmland, but bring a YMCA to town. The result was a heated debate between those ready for more local development, and those tired of seeing paved-over farmland in the rich Puyallup Valley.

3. , Oct. 26: Bonney Lake beauty Shea Norton did an interview with Patch about her life on the Seattle Mist, the local lingerie football league. The Sumner High School grad talked about enjoying summer on Lake Tapps, hiking Victor Falls and fourwheeling in the dirt.

2. , Oct. 11: Mary Mushapaidzi was found murdered in her Tapps Island home after her live-in boyfriend, Mthulisi Ndlovu, reported her missing to police on Oct. 9. Investigators found her burned body in the basement of their home, which they shared with their two children. She had beaten to death after what was reported as an argument over dirty dishes. Ndlovu pled not-guilty to the murder and will face prosecutors in spring 2012 for first-degree murder.

1. , May 4: In a time of hard recession, Sumner was overjoyed at the annoucement of an Amazon location that opened in the industrial district. The shipping and receiving center has brought hundreds of new, full-time jobs to town.
