With the threatened closure of the Sumner pool, parents shouldn't dilly dally if they're looking for swimming lessons for their children.

With the threatened closure of the Sumner pool, parents shouldn't dilly dally if they're looking for swimming lessons for their children.  We are blessed to have a facility in downtown Sumner that offers several options for classes and for varying skill levels.  In fact, did you know that there are TWO organizations offering classes at the pool?

I was blown away again today when I mentioned the Titans Swim School to an acquaintance.  She'd never heard of it - and she goes to the pool on a regular basis to take her daughters there for lessons offered through the recreation department.  I personally LOVE the lessons my younger son is receiving at the Sumner Pool.  Parking is a breeze and you don't pay for a membership.  There's no lottery system - you sign up and you're in!  It's a laid back atmosphere and, most importantly, my child is getting quality instruction.

When your child is never advanced past the very beginner class after six (yes, six!) sessions at the Y, you have to ask yourself what your membership is really worth.  When, and if, the Sumner pool closes, the Y will be your next best option.  Don't get me wrong, the Y is great for their infant-parent swim classes and for introducing your kids to the water (I was a member of the Y for years, and we participated in both), but I can say my child only truly advanced in swimming once we went elsewhere.  There are plenty of quality swim programs around (we went all the way to Fife) - but they're not convenient.  We need to keep quality lessons in Sumner.  We're surrounded by waterfront options here- kids need to know how to swim.  Driving to another neighboring city for lessons isn't going to be an option for everyone.

The Sumner Pool isn't sitting empty - it's being used on a daily basis.  In addition to lessons and lap swim being offered through the recreation center, the South Sound Titans competitive swim team is also offering swim lessons.  The Titans Swim School has two summer sessions you might want to check out.  The first summer session runs June 6 through 30, and a second session will be offered July 11 through August 4. Registrations for each session open approximately two weeks prior.  Instructors are certified USA Swimming coaches and must pass the USA swimming coaches safety training (in addition to the usual CPR, first aid and background checks).  USA Swimming is the national governing body for the sport of swimming in the United States.
