Save Our Pool!

It's time the district takes a sober look at the importance the pool plays in our community.

While the much-talked about YMCA is great, it's not for everybody.  Besides the fact that the foundation isn't even poured (and it's several years away, at best), it's expensive.  Not everyone can afford a membership to the Y and classes can be a bear to get into.  So, where will our area children learn to swim?

Just Google "drowning statistics Pierce County Washington" and you'll see this at the top of your search: "Three people drowned in Pierce County lakes in three days," "Woman drowns in Puyallup River," and "Third drowning in Pierce County."

Last night, the South Sound Titans held a meeting to talk about why the pool should stay open and what we can do to help.  Bottom line: we need to educate the community.  Many haven't even heard this is being discussed again (and nearing a decision).  With the Sumner-Bonney Lake area near so much water it is vitally important that we have swim lessons available for our children.

If the SHS pool isn't open, where will kids learn to swim?  And, is closing the pool worth the potential loss of life?  I understand there are budget issues, times are tough. But, this is a safety issue.  In an area with so many waterfront swimming options, it's irresponsible to consider closing the primary site where kids learn to swim from qualified instructors.

Less than a year ago, the Sumner School District trimmed over $200,000 from its budget by eliminating all the pool staff.  Even if the pool closed, the tank filled in and the space converted to classrooms, the building space will still require most of the same expense to operate as it does with the pool.  Treating and heating the water is the only extra expense.  Besides, the district can't afford more teachers to put in the additional classroom space anyway.

It's time the district takes a sober look at the importance the pool plays in our community.  It saves lives, keeps people healthy and provides jobs and an economic impact that will be lost if the pool is closed.  Where do you think all those parents of swim team members go after they drop their kids off to practice for two hours?  They're spending money at Fred Meyer, Starbucks, etc.  I know, because I'm one of them (and would shop in Puyallup, if it were not for going to the pool).  Do we want to keep those dollars in Sumner?

Once that pool is closed, it's closed forever.  I hope to see you there on Wednesday night!
