Storm Debris? Try Hugelkulture!

A quick tip to read a full article on using woody debris for sustainable gardening.

Hi all!

I've been long wanting to build raised beds filled with rotten wood in my garden, it's a technique called Hugelkulture (from German: raised mound garden). But I didn't have lots of rotten wood sitting around and was too lazy to look for some. And looky now: it's just fallen from the sky!!!

So before you run off to give your biomass to someone else, you may want to think about using it to store carbon, build soil, and reduce irrigation needs in your garden.

A great article about it's use is here from the website richsoil.com.

PS. Albert's hugelkulture mounds (in picture) are exceptionally big. Many of the same benefits can be accessed with a mound half that size, though bigger is better as far as soil biology and water retention.
