Week 2 of Summer

This is about the second week of summer events from the City of Bonney Lake

If anyone was looking for some great tool stories this week, I don’t have any. It was a pretty mellow week without any large projects that needed my super tool skills. I did learn how to hyperlink, that was pretty neat. And David and I did take time to see how many mice a mouse family could have in a year (see below). Overall it was another great week of working at the park, in the Big Green Container, and in the office.

Alex Zerbe led of the week with Monday’s Kids Club at Allan Yorke Park. He brought entertainment for the kids and adults and a few jokes that kept the parents laughing. He juggled bowling pins, and a bowling ball, egg, fire torch combination that included audience participation. Alex Zerbe kept the crowd amused for the entire show! I enjoyed Zerbe because of the combination of kid’s enjoyment and the few adult jokes. This Kids Club was defiantly one for the entire family. He will be back in Bonney Lake in October at the Bonney Lake Library. About 200 people showed up Monday night.

The always popular Reptileman brought in about 500 people Tuesday morning at Allan Yorke Park. The parking lots were filled as families flocked to the grass. Molen Orthodontics (the Reptileman sponsor) was there with goodie bags handing out toothbrushes, chap stick, floss, and t-shirts to those who wanted one. The park was the place to be to see: a Rubber Boa, a Copperhead snake, a Milk snake, a Burmese Python, a turtle, an Alligator, and a Gaboon Viper (which can eat a porcupine!). His animals mainly stayed on stage but he did take a few out to the crowd. After the show the audience could hold the boa and look at Lucy the alligator to take pictures and feel what these two animals were like. Lucy can do a “trick” that involves putting pressure by the eyes and alligators fall asleep, which he showed the crowd, and also advised not to try it on one in the wild as it would not work. He shared facts about animals and why the world needs snakes. (Fact #1: Two rats can have up to 2,000 babies in one year. Then those offspring can start having the same amount.) Coming from someone who can’t stand mice or rats, I am really glad we have snakes. Another fact that he shared was that you can tell the difference between a Crocodile and an Alligator by the shape of their noses. Crocodiles have longer skinnier noses, and alligators have shorter, rounder noses. In case you missed the Reptileman this time he will be back during Week 7 (Monday August 7 at 6:30pm). Make sure to get to Allan Yorke Park early because parking does fill up fast.

Hook Me Up was a success for those that were not at Allan Yorke Park last night. About 150 people showed up to see the local Jazz band play on an overcast night. It never rained and was a perfect temperature for sitting outside. For someone who likes country and whatever Top 50 songs are out right now, they were great. They played songs like the Charlie Brown Theme Song, and Route 66. Those were the only two songs I knew (sorry!), but if you want their set list go to their website at: http://hookmeup.bandvista.com/. They had a few in the crowd who had seen them previously to last night, but most were new. From what I have heard, people enjoyed them. If you liked them let us know. This was their first time performing at Tunes @ Tapps.

When you make it out to Tunes@ Tapps make sure to head over to the table for Relay for Life Team Bonney Lake. They have candy, suckers, toys, and popcorn. It is a great cause so be sure to check it out.

Yesterday (Wednesday) David and I went to Bonney Lake High School to iron out the details for Relay for Life next weekend (July 27-28). They discussed where the power will come from, where parking and drop off will be, where the survivor tent will be, and where the best places for the stages and movie screen will be at. We also talked about how and when items will need to be dropped off and picked up, and who will be the volunteers.

In case anyone tried to go City offices today, they may have found a few closed at the times of 11:30 to 1. This was because of Food For Thought, a city employee’s potluck/ luncheon, a twice yearly event that pays tribute to employees and gives them time to catch up with co-workers. Mayor Neil Johnson gave a speech, and introduced new employees, and other department heads introduced seasonal and temporary employees in their departments. The lunch included hamburgers, hotdogs, chips, salads, desserts, and games (Ladderball, hula hoops, etc.). It was a fun time to meet people I may have not met yet and get to see some of the city employees I have only met once. It was great to see everyone getting together from the police department, the finance office, public works (streets, sewers, water), human resources, all departments were there if I missed any.

David and I met with Amy from BECU today (Thursday) and they are excited to be sponsoring Aces Up at Bonney Lake Days on Friday night. We are very excited to be working with them for this event! Aces Up is a local band from Enumclaw who will be playing at the country superstar stop, Watershed, at the Gorge earlier in August.

If you were at any of the events and want to see pictures we took during the week, check out the City of Bonney Lake’s Facebook page at: www.facebook.com/citybonneylake

Thank you to all of those who have made out to the events in the past couple of weeks and to those who have told me you read last weeks blog. I hope this keeps you up to date on what we do to make the events successful.
