Blackouts on Highway 410 Leave Morning Commute at a Standstill

High winds throughout the evening have created more problems for Bonney Lake residents this morning and caused widespread blackouts across the city.

UPDATE: 12 p.m. 1/25/12

From PSE: SR 410 power has been restored. There are still a number of homes in the Bonney Lake/Lake Tapps area that were hit hard during last night's wind storm and those folks can expect their power back some time tomorrow evening.

After beginning to see some relief from days without power, Bonney Lake residents awoke Wednesday morning to find traffic at a standstill along Highway 410 due to widespread power outages in the area after a heavy windstorm swept the region.

According to Bonney Lake Public Works, SR 410 is without traffic signals throughout the city.

Northbound on 214th Ave. E. is blocked, from Home Depot to Sumner-Buckley Highway. Sumner-Buckley Highway, west of 230th Ave. was also reported as blocked. 230th Ave. and 96th St. are also blocked.

The best way to go north on at this time is to take Connells Prairie Road. Rhodes Lake Road is also open.

Bonney Lake Public Works crews are working around the clock to keep the sewer and water running -- as both utilities are currently powered by a generator and have been since Tuesday.

A call to the Bonney Lake Police Department confirmed that concerned citizens were calling in from all over the city, reporting blackouts. At this time, BLPD does not have the manpower or resources to staff traffic routers or create road diversions.

According to PSE, there were 36 incidents reported after last night's windstrom. Currently, there are about 22,000 outages across their service district and, as of 6 a.m. this morning, 7,500 of them are in Pierce County.

PSE crews expect to complete service restoration today.

East Pierce Fire and Rescue is not experiencing a high call volume at this time, said a representative. Outages across Bonney Lake seem to be "spotty," but the main concern is SR 410.

If possible, residents are advised to return home to wait it out, until crews can fix the downed lines. There were also multiple reports of trees falling onto the roadways, particularly 214th Ave. E. Use caution when leaving your home or getting in your car.

Sumner, on the other hand, is not reporting any outages at this time.
