4:38pm: An officer responded to a reported hit and run of a mailbox at the intersection of 190th Ave. E. and 101st St. E. A resident reported a ‘blue, smaller pickup truck’ stuck their box. The officer noted tire skid marks leading up to it and the mailbox was leaning over at a steep angle. The resident said the truck was attempting to drive north down the hill and spun around 180 degrees and impacted the mailbox with its rear bumper. The resident spoke to the driver, who appeared to be about 50 years old. The man refused to give his name and seemed intoxicated.

Dispatch tracked down the address connected to the license plate and drove there to speak with the man, who lived down the street.

No one was home when police knocked on the door and the truck was not there. The garage doors were left open with lights and music on, and there was an unattended fire in the front yard. The officer waited and eventually the man in the blue pickup drove by slowly, starting at the officer as he drove past. The officer followed him, but since it was icy out he could not follow too quickly. He eventually followed the man as he pulled into his driveway. The man immediately exited his vehicle and was aggressive with the officer, saying “I don’t know anything about any mailbox.” The officer smelled intoxicants and his eyes were watery and bloodshot.

He refused to take his hands out of his pockets and called the officer a ‘p***y’ and tried to walk away. The man attempted to struggle when the officer tried to detain him and tried to wrestle his way out of the situation, but the officer was able to subdue him and place him in handcuffs in the back of his car.

The officer described the man as in a ‘mood swing,’ as he continued to berate the officer, saying, ‘I’m an angry person. I hate being f****d with and I don’t put up with it.” The man was booked at Buckley Jail and blew a .146 BAC. He was cited with a criminal citation for driving under the influence and for Hit and Run on Unattended Property. He was also cited for the criminal citation of resisting a public officer.

Attempted Vehicle Prowl

3:49pm: An officer was dispatched to a report of an attempted vehicle theft in the store parking lot. The woman said she had parked her Acura Integra on the south side of the store and went into Goodwill to do some shopping. She returned to her vehicle 15 minutes later to find a man in the drivers seat trying to steal her car. She could see he had a bare metal key that he was trying to use in the ignition. She confronted him and asked what he was doing, he stated at her blankly. She told him to get out, which he did and walked west toward 211th Ave. E. At that point, she called police.

Police stopped one man, but he was not the same person that stole her car. Another person matching the description was located, and he ran away from police into the garden entrance of Fred Meyer and was eventually caught in the wooded area behind Goodwill. The officer had used his Taser on the man, but to no effect. The suspect’s baggy clothing prevented it from piercing his skin. The woman said she was “99.9 percent” sure that was him.

The man said he was only “looking in the vehicle to see what was inside of it” and he appeared to be intoxicated. The man said he had been using meth, but asked the police if they could release him so he could spend one more night with his girlfriend.

He was booked for attempted motor vehicle theft, possession of burglary tools, obstructing and for an outstanding felony warrant out of Pierce County.
