6:55am: Dispatch advised of a vehicle vs. pole collision in the Wal-Mart parking lot. They said a caller observed a vehicle hit a disabled parking sign, back up then go forward again, hitting the pole a second time. The vehicle was leaving the scene, and the caller followed it east on SR 410. The caller said the vehicle had turned into a self-storage business, Centennial Storage.

The officer went to the storage business and located the suspect vehicle, the driver just exiting. The man had bare feet and looked back toward the officer and raised his hands like he gave up. There was a large amount of steam coming from the vehicle. The man admitted he was driving drunk and rammed a pole, and when asked to do a sobriety test, the man replied, “No, let’s just skip that part where I blow into the machine, it’s easier that way.” The officer could smell the strong odor of alcohol and noticed the man was unsteady on his feet. He was arrested and another officer was called to deal with the two passengers.

The two passengers, a 23 year-old woman and 55 year-old man, said they were all living in the vehicle, and had been drinking in the Wal-Mart parking lot all night. The woman said she was sleeping with the driver, who thought she had been cheating on him with the other man. She denied it, but he got angry at her and rammed the car into the pole at Wal-Mart, backed up and did it a second time. Both people were extremely intoxicated and released at the scene.

When asked where he wanted the car towed, the man replied it didn’t matter, because he wouldn’t be able to get it back anyway. The man’s BAC was initially registered at .157, and he told officers they saved his life, because he needed a place to stay. He wanted to booked into jail quickly so he wouldn’t be late for breakfast; he hadn’t eaten in a week and needed a shower.

The man was booked at Buckley Jail for reckless driving, DUI and hit and run. He was also cited for failing to show proof of insurance.

Feb. 24 DUI

6:06pm: An off-duty officer was driving a marked police car, on his way to assist with the Bonney Lake Police . He was driving east on McCutcheon Rd. E. and saw a red SUV on the shoulder of the roadway facing east. Without warning, the red SUV pulled out onto the roadway without signaling and another vehicle ahead of the officer had to slam on the breaks to avoid a collision.

The officer watched the SUV cross the double yellow line and drift back into an oncoming lane of traffic, corrected itself and did it again. The vehicle was only going about 20 mph. The officer maneuvered around the other vehicles on the road and pulled over the vehicle. He asked the 58 year-old female driver if everything was OK, and she replied that she was just trying to get her dog home. She was slurring her words and talking very slow and fumbled through her things for a long time before finding her wallet. The officer determined she was highly intoxicated and she admitted to drinking two wine coolers during the day and took muscle relaxers a few hours before.

Due to the location of the incident, the officer contacted a WSP trooper to facilitate the sobriety test, but the roadway was too dangerous for a field test. The woman was booked with Washington State Patrol on DUI charges.
