The man acted confused and didn’t seem to know anything other than that he crashed into the fence. He lives across the street from the fence he collided into. He said he was trying to go to Walmart to buy a candy bar. It appeared to police that the man had backed up his vehicle out of his driveway and continued across 191st and hit a light pole. He continued to back up into a nearby trashcan, drove northbound out of control and turned onto 105th St. E. He was unable to keep his car on the road and drove through the gravel on the north side of 105th St. E. and collided with a rock retaining wall and utility trailer legally parked in the gravel. He then drove southbound across 105th St. E. and collided with the 6-foot tall cedar privacy fence. His car pushed the back of a truck parked behind the fence into another parked car in the driveway. That was where his vehicle had come to a stop.

Police observed that the man had a difficult time standing up and maintaining his balance. The man said he was not intoxicated but had diabetes and problems with his equilibrium. Medical aide arrived on scene and said his blood sugar was normal – his field sobriety test came back negative for alcohol.

The man seemed extremely confused throughout his conversations with police and asked them strange questions about someone driving a truck when there were no trucks visible in the area. The officer asked what truck he was referring to and the man pointed at him and said, “that one right there.” The man then looked toward the patrol car and asked if it was elevated. The officer didn’t know what to make of his statements and arrested him for driving under the influence of drugs.

Police spoke to one of the neighbors, who said he knew the man well and would handle it on his own. The owner of the trailer also didn’t want to press charges. The man was arrested and his vehicle impounded.

Residential Burglary

11:39am: Police were dispatched to a residential burglary report on the 5600 block of 195th Ave. Pl. E. The 21 year-old caller said she came home and found that an unknown person had forced themselves into her residence. She said that she and her mother left the house around 7 a.m. and the door was locked – it was unlocked when she returned home.

It appeared as though the suspects had used a blunt tool to punch a small hole in the wood door. The suspect then reached inside the residence and unlocked it. Police didn’t find anyone in the home but noticed that it appeared someone had rummaged through items in the bedrooms.

The woman’s MP3 player had been taken, plus about $300 in work tips from a desk drawer and about $500 worth of jewelry. The suspects had also gone through her personal financial file cabinets, tax returns and bank statements.

The woman and her mother were given a stolen item inventory list and the case was forwarded for follow-up. There are no suspects at this time.

November 1

Assault

4pm: Officer responded to a home on the 7500 block of 190th Ave. E. for a report of an assault that had just taken place. The victim and suspect lived directly across the street from each other and BLPD had responded to several incidents involving the two men over the years.

Police spoke to the 44 year-old male victim, who said he called police because the other man, 48, had assaulted him by spitting in his face. The man said it all occurred in the middle of the street, directly in front of the residence while he was using his leaf blower. He said he was not injured but still had the other man’s dried saliva on his face. Police noticed there was dried spit on his cheek.

He said he had been doing yard work when the other man began yelling at him from across the street. He was threatening to pay for someone to kill him and hurt his family. He then threatened to burn the man’s house down, all while using extremely vulgar language. The man said this went on for about 30 minutes and he continued to ignore him, until the man got extremely agitated and came across the street in an attempt to start a fight. The neighbor then walked up to him and spit in his face. At that point, the man called 911.

The man told police he thought his neighbor was angry with him for blowing leaves in the direction of his house. Police questioned the other man, who said he didn’t intentionally spit on the man, and if he did, it was because he was yelling at him for the leaves.

The man caught the whole incident on video surveillance and showed police that he was telling the truth. Police could clearly see that the neighbor had deliberately walked across the street to confront the man and spit on him – it was not an accident. The man also did not blow any leaves in the direction of the house.

The man was arrested for assault.
