Cougar Sighting Near Bonney Lake Elementary Friday

A resident who police say was an avid hunter identified what he believed was a cougar in the area of 82nd Street E and 191st Avenue E at about 9 a.m.

Police received a report of a cougar sighting Friday morning near Bonney Lake Elementary School.

A resident in the area of 82nd Street E and 191st Avenue E who is an avid hunter told police he saw the cougar at about 9 a.m. in his back yard, Bonney Lake Police Officer Daron Wolschleger said.

Officers responded but did not locate any wildlife; they did note the sound of dogs barking nearby. Representatives from the Washington Game Warden Association later followed up and deployed one dog to trace the animal but no scent was picked up, Wolshleger said.

Police received no further reports of a cougar Friday. That animal was last seen headed eastbound into a brushy, wooded area. Bonney Lake Elementary was on a modified lockdown while officers searched the area but was cleared by about 10:30 a.m. Wolshleger said.

If you spot a cougar or any other wildlife near your residence, do not approach the animal and call 9-1-1.
