Driver Injured in Single-Vehicle Crash Near Lake Tapps

Traffic on 9th Street East near 190th Avenue East was reportedly closed for nearly an hour Thursday morning while crews worked to free the driver and lone occupant of the vehicle.

East Pierce Fire and Rescue firefighters used the “Jaws of Life” to remove a driver from his vehicle after a crash at 10:45 a.m. Thursday, at the north end of Lake Tapps.

According to officials, witnesses reported seeing the vehicle swerve off the road on the 18900 block of 9th Street East and into some trees, trapping the driver inside.

East Pierce Battalion Chief Rick Goetz said the vehicle landed on the driver’s side. A stump had penetrated the driver’s side window, crushing the dash and pinning the driver, who was the sole occupant.

One lane of 9th Street East, near 190th Avenue East, was closed for nearly an hour during the operation. The driver was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Pierce County Sherriff’s deputies are investigating the cause of the single-vehicle crash.
