Elderly Couple Lose Dog, Home in Fire

A home on the 8100 block of 148th Av Ct E. in Sumner was completely destroyed by fire on Tuesday afternoon. There were no injuries but the homeowner lost his dog in the blaze.

A local family lost their home in Sumner on Tuesday after a candle was left burning in a bedroom.

The fire spread to the attic before firefighters could contain it and the house, located on the 8100 block of 148th Av Ct E., is thought to be a total loss.

80-year-old Don Olsen lived there with his wife and dog and they were home when the candle ignited, he said. Olsen and his wife managed to escape and call 9-11, but their dog, 12-year-old Barney, died in the fire.

Olsen has owned the home for over 20 years. They have family in Orting, who were on scene for support.

East Pierce Fire and Rescue and Pierce County Fire responded to the call and the house was already fully involved when units arrived, said EPFR Assistant Chief Russ McCallion.

β€œOnce the fire gets into the attic, it’s more difficult to put out. Crews attacked this fire defensively,” said McCallion.

Five fire engines, two medic units and a total of 18 firefighters are on the scene. PSE is on the scene fixing downed power lines around the house but no other residents lost power, workers reported.

The cause of the fire is still considered under investigation. The Red Cross is providing support for the family. If you'd like to donate to the local Red Cross, visit their website at http://www.rainier-redcross.org/
