Fire Destroys Barn near Buckley

This press release was provided by East Pierce Fire and Rescue.

Pierce County, Wash. – Firefighters from East Pierce Fire and Rescue, Buckley Fire Department and Orting Valley Fire and Rescue converged on a barn fire at 9:30 p.m. last night at the 10900 block of 258th Avenue East. When they arrived, the barn was about 40 percent involved, reports East Pierce Acting Battalion Chief Lance Schinkal. All of the animals had been removed from the two-story, wood barn prior to the arrival of the firefighters.

Due to the distance from a fire hydrant, the firefighters laid more than 1,000 feet of hose, for a time blocking 112th Street East. Law enforcement was called to provide traffic control. Tenders from Buckley and Orting carried additional water to the scene.

The firefighters were able to quickly douse the flames and prevent the fire from burning any other structures, including a house located approximately 100 feet from the barn.
Pierce County Fire Marshal Mark Carman says the cause of the fire is considered accidental. The barn, which contained horse stalls and a tack room, plus personal storage upstairs, is a total loss. He estimates the loss of the structure and contents at $25,000.

Carman says that the fire was discovered by the homeowner as he was pulling into his driveway. He called 9-1-1 and attempted to fight the fire. “The homeowner definitely held the fire in check until the firefighters arrived,” he says.
