Bonney Lake officers arrested a 20-year-old man for possession of marijuana and unlawful possession of illegal weapons after he was caught smoking marijuana with his 15-year-old girlfriend in the Regal Cinema parking lot.
Officers noticed a brown Nissan Maxima parked in a dark area of the cinema’s west parking lot at 10 p.m. on Sunday, March 20. The officers became suspicious when they noticed a large flame inside the vehicle, perhaps indicating that someone was smoking in the car.
The officers approached the vehicle, noticed a male driver and female passenger, and spoke to the driver, according to the police report. Police said the driver told them he and the passenger had tickets to a movie, but the man would not make eye contact and spoke very slowly. He provided identification, the report said, but the young woman told the officers she had left her ID at home and was "almost 16 years old."
The driver, who was not the registered owner of the Nissan, told the officers he was planning to buy the car but he couldn’t remember the owner’s name. He then said his friend had lent him the car. He could not provide any paperwork or full names to support his statements. Dispatch was not able to contact the registered owner, a Spanaway woman.
The officer patted down the driver and found a small screwdriver and a small flashlight. Officers only found the girl’s identification, the report said, contradicting her earlier claim.
An officer noticed a gun in the backseat. The driver consented to a police search of the car, which turned up marijuana in the glove box and a multi-colored glass pipe with burnt residue under the driver's seat. The officers found a large dagger in a black sheath between the driver’s seat and center console, an airsoft gun in the backseat and a very large sword or machete in a black sheath in the trunk.
The juvenile female admitted to smoking the marijuana, which she said was the man’s drug. She said she was dating the man but that they hadn't been intimate, she is in the relationship for companionship but knows he wants more. The officer explained to her that if the relationship continues, it could create legal problems for both of them, since he is an adult and she a 15-year-old minor.
The girl’s parents came to pick her up and said they knew about her relationship with the older man and the possible legal repercussions. The officers explained that all involved charges would go before the juvenile prosecutor at Remann Hall and that they should watch the mail to see if she had been charged with anything and issued a court date.
The man was transported to Buckley Jail where he was booked for unlawful possession of marijuana, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia and unlawful possession of dangerous weapons.
The items were admitted into Bonney Lake Police evidence. The man admitted possession of all items and offered the air-soft gun to the police to for training use.
