Potential Pipe Bomb Shut Down Puyallup Ave. Early Thursday Morning

The Pierce County Sheriff bomb squad came to Sumner on a report of a potential pipe bomb this morning. It turned out to be a false alarm, but police had to shut down Puyallup St. during the investigation.

A potential pipe bomb turned out to be a false alarm this morning but caused the shutdown of Puyallup St. in Sumner, according to a city report.

Sumner police received a call at 6:04 a.m. this morning from a citizen who saw the suspicious device on the corner of Puyallup St. and Tacoma Ave. E. Police were unable to determine whether or not it was an explosive, so they called the bomb squad and closed the surrounding area to vehicle and pedestrian traffic.

Puyallup St., from East Valley to Fryar Ave. and Tacoma Ave. E. from 142nd Ave. E. to Puyallup St. were closed for approximately two hours this morning before the area was secured.

Once the bomb squad arrived, the Sumner report said they were able to “quickly determine” that the device was not explosive.
