Sumner Experiences Weekend Rash of Car Vandalism

A handful of Sumner residents experienced smashed car windows and prowls last weekend. Sumner Police believe the cases could be related.

Last weekend, Sumner Police responded to a high volume of calls related to car prowls and malicious mischief.

Between Sat., Sept. 17 and Sun. Sept. 18, five residents within close proximity to one another reported that the driver side windows on their cars had been smashed in. Six vehicles in all had been vandalized.

While police guess that the incidents are related, due to the locations and time period of the crimes, there are no suspects.

11:21am: Officers responded to a residence on 158th Ave. E. for a report of a vehicle prowl. The person said that at approximately 10 a.m., someone stole a GPS and black diaper bag out of his silver Volkswagen Passat while it was parked in his grandmother’s driveway. The man said he was at her house doing some work, and had left his car unlocked for a short period of time. He also thought the suspects went through the glove box. The GPS had an estimated worth of $100.

9:54pm: A resident on Sumner Ave. reported that an unknown person shattered her son’s car window – nothing was taken and the doors were locked. Her son is deployed with the US Air Force and had left his car at her home for safekeeping.

The red 1992 Nissan Sentra was parked on the 1200 block of Maple St. The incident occurred within the hour, because the woman said she left the residence at 9 p.m. and returned shortly before calling police.

After the officer finished his report and left the scene, he noticed another vehicle on the 1300 block of Maple St. had it’s driver side window broken. The red 1994 Ford truck was parked on the north side of Maple, facing west. The window was mostly intact, except for a softball-sized hole through the center. The car doors were shut and locked.

In his report, the officer stated that he believed the suspects either walked past or drove by both of the vehicles and broke out the windows to cause damage, rather than to prowl for items. The officer called the registered owner of the Ford truck and left a voicemail, but cleared the scene after no suspects were found.

2pm: A resident on Kincaid Ave. reported that someone broke out the driver side window of his 1977 Mercedes Benz, while it was parked overnight on the 900 block of Maple St. He heard the window break at about 10 p.m. on Saturday but did not discover the damage until shortly before making the report.

7:18pm: A resident on Washington St. reported that between 5 p.m. on Saturday and 8 a.m. that morning, someone smashed out the driver side window of his 1991 Mazda, which was parked on the street in front of his residence. He said nothing was taken and there was no indication of what was used to smash the window.

10:15pm: A resident reported that between 11 p.m. on Sept. 17 and 10 a.m. on Sept. 18, someone damaged a 1990 Toyota in front of his residence on 66th St. E. He said nothing was missing. The back canopy window was smashed and it was unclear what was used to damage the window.
