Sumner Police Blotter: DUI Driver Caught With Pants Down, Stolen Fence Poles

The following arrest and crime information was provided by the Sumner Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

MAY 10, 2013

DUI: An officer responded to McDonalds for DUI driver just before 10 p.m. The vehicle was stopped in the entrance of the restaurant, blocking access and vehicles were stacked up at the entrance to the drive thru. The 37-year-old female driver was arguing with someone on a cell phone and appeared to be in distress. The officer smelled liquor and the woman admitted to spending time at a bar in Orting, but said she didn’t drink anything. When the officer asked her to step out of the car for a sobriety test, he realized her pants were unbuttoned. Halfway through the test, the woman realized she couldn’t pass and said, “If you’re going to arrest me, then arrest me!” The officer did just that.

Minor Intoxicated: About 10:30 p.m., a concerned citizen reported a suspicious intoxicated minor at 64th St. and 166th Ave. The officer located the subject near WINCO. He fell over several times while talking with the officer and had the heavy odor of intoxicants. A field test showed his BAC to be three times the legal limit. The underage man said he had been drinking whisky because his dad remarried and he didn’t like his stepmom. They were on their honeymoon, so he had no one to call. Since he didn’t have anyone to take care of him and was unwilling to go to the hospital, he was booked in Puyallup Jail for minor intoxicated in a public place.

Disorderly Conduct: An officer doing routine patrol near Main St. and Valley Ave. at 1:40 a.m. observed a man lying in the grass on the side of the street and appeared to be unconscious. He admitted to officers and paramedics that he was drinking at Farelli’s and lived a couple blocks away, but there was no one home. He thought officers and firefighters were laughing at him for being drunk and got upset with the responders; he was issued a citation for disorderly conduct. He admitted to police that he was an army recruiter and knew better.

Theft: A caller reported to police at 7 p.m. that two subjects were taking fence polls from a business on 24th Street and 137th Ave. Police arrived on scene to find one subject in the back of the SUV, trying to fit a poll in the back of his vehicle. The men told police he had gone to Subway and returned to this area to use a porta-potty. When asked about the metal poles, he wouldn’t give a straight answer. The man was arrested for theft and is believed to be responsible for similar thefts in the area.

DUI: An officer running radar on East Valley Highway around 10 p.m. noted a vehicle pass by at almost 70 mph. When approached, the driver said he was drinking in Tacoma. Halfway through his sobriety test, the man said, “I’m failing this thing. I’m done!” He was cited for speeding and DUI.
