Sumner Police Blotter, March 17 - 22

Wallet theft, a car prowl and a suspicious person in a medical facility are highlighted in the Sumner bi-weekly police blotter.

March 17

Suspicious Person

An officer responded to a medical facility for a report of a suspicious subject who entered their building and was going in and out of rooms within the building. The staff started to get suspicious when he entered the laboratory and made an employee feel uncomfortable. After a while, he left the facility but police were not called until a half hour after he left. A short time later, an officer was called back to the same location after an employee’s bank notified her that her debit card was being used to make several purchases. The employee looked in her purse where it was kept in her office and noticed her wallet was gone. She advised that she left the room that the suspicious subject was in because he was staring at her, leaving her belongings unsecure.

12:01am: An officer was conducting speed enforcement in the 14300 block of 8th St. when he looked over and noticed a vehicle that he was familiar with its hood up. After about 30 seconds, the officer observed a male throw something into his own vehicle, which was parked next to it, close the hood and drive off. The officer believed the vehicle had just been prowled, so he attempted to pull the vehicle over.

After a while, the vehicle stopped in the lane of travel. The officer contacted the driver who was extremely nervous, shaking and failing to make eye contact. The officer noticed a vehicle part sitting on the floorboard of the vehicle. The driver of the vehicle advised that his friend “Billy” said he could come and take the car part from the vehicle. The officer started to ask questions about “Billy” and how he might be able to contact him. He could not provide any information on “Billy.” The driver’s girlfriend called while he was talking with the officer.

The officer said to answer the phone and immediately hand the phone to him, so the officer could talk to his girlfriend without the driver providing input. The driver answered and immediately told his girlfriend he was going to his friend “Billy’s” car to get a car part. The driver hung up the phone and would not initially allow the officer to speak with his girlfriend. After the officer asked the driver again, he agreed to call his girlfriend so the officer could talk to her.

The girlfriend told the officer that she did not know of a friend named “Billy” and he was not going to pick up car parts. She advised that she believed that he was coming home from the bar and that he should have been home by now. The driver was found to have a suspended driver’s license and admitted to drinking three beers. He proceeded to ask the officer, “can’t you just cut me a break?” The driver was booked into Puyallup Jail on charges of DUI, driving while license suspended, vehicle prowl and third degree theft.

Wallet Theft

Officers responded to a wallet theft call from an employee by another employee in the 13500 block of 38th St E. Upon arrival, the officers were advised that the video had been viewed and they know who took the wallet. The video confirmed that the victim dropped his wallet on the floor and the suspect picked it up and did not return it. Initially, the suspect was contacted by workplace administration and denied having the wallet. The suspect then advised that he did have the wallet for a while, but he threw it in the garbage. It wasn’t until people started looking in garbage cans that the suspect admitted to having the wallet on his person. The wallet was turned over to the victim and security; however there was no longer any money inside. While reviewing the video, the officer could see the victim put money into the wallet while sitting at the lunch table. The wallet must have fallen out of the victim’s pocket and landed on the floor, which is where the video showed the suspect take the wallet. The victim advised that the wallet had approximately $1600 and that he was going to the bank after work to deposit the money. The suspect was arrested and later booked into Pierce County jail for Theft 2nd Degree.
