The Sumner Bank of America manager called to report a suspicious person trying to pass a stolen check. She described the man as large with a tattoo on his neck and wearing a scorpion necklace.

The $750 check had been made out to a lawn services company and the teller noticed the signature didn’t match the one on file. When asked about the man who wrote the check, the suspect told the teller he paid him for yard work and was a drunk, that’s why his signature was shaky.

In researching the account holder, the manager realized that there were several possibly fraudulent checks from his account made out to multiple people, totaling over $7,000. The man was notified and said he didn’t write any of those checks.

Police have identified the suspect and are in the process of bringing him into custody.

Boxer Arrested for Domestic Violence

A resident in the apartment complex at 5023 Parker Rd. called police to say she could hear a man and woman violently arguing in the apartment above hers. She reported that they had been arguing for about 30 minutes and she could hear something about the man cheating, then the woman was thrown to the floor and crying. Other neighbors reported a similar story and what sounded like a boxing match.

No one answered when officers knocked on the door, so the building manager had to let them in. When they entered the apartment, a man walked out wearing only a bedsheet and said he had been asleep in the bedroom with his girlfriend. The officers asked him to get her, and she appeared at the doorway fully clothed and sniffling.

Police said they wanted to speak to her, and as she walked outside, her boyfriend told her that he already told the police that nothing had happened.

The man maintained there was no argument, but officers noticed he had fresh scratches on his face and smelled like he had been drinking. He said that he was a professional boxer, and that if he wanted to hurt her, he would have. Police asked him about the scratches and he claimed they happened earlier in the day. The woman denied suffering any abuse and said she hit her face on a coffee table.

All of a sudden, police heard someone moving around in another part of the house. The man said his brother was drunk and asleep on the couch. He started to act belligerent and shoved one of the officers, saying his brother wasn’t going anywhere, since it was Christmas time. They warned him he would be arrested for obstructing justice, but the man refused to back off so he was arrested.

During the scuffle, the woman was outside talking on her cellphone to her boyfriend’s mother, saying that he hit her earlier in the night. Officers overheard her saying that he punched her several times in the face after she found out he was cheating on her.

Even after confronting her with her own words, the woman refused to sign anything, make a statement or accept medical aide.

While police were getting ready to take the man to jail for domestic violence, the mother pulled up to the residence. She said that both of her sons should be locked up and that her son should be held responsible for what he did to her. She asked the woman to be honest about what happened. The next day, the woman went to the Sumner Police Department to finish her statement. The couple now have a no-contact order between them.

Dec. 24

DUI in the Jack in the Box Parking Lot

A caller called police around 1 a.m. to report that a man fell asleep while ordering at the Jack in the Box drive-thru. They watched him go over the curb on his way in and wouldn’t wake up for 5 minutes, even while others honked at him to move.

Police found him in the parking lot, asleep with the motor still running. He smelled of liquor and had a suspended license. He was also required to have an interlock machine, which was not installed. When he stepped out of the car, police noticed a large bag of marijuana in the drivers seat.

The man was arrested for DUI, possession of marijuana and not having the required interlock system.

Dec. 28

Schizophrenic Man Involuntarily Committed

A woman on Alder Ave. called police to report that her 20 year-old son, who was schizophrenic, was off his medications and acting violent. She said her son had been hospitalized but recently discharged.

When police arrived at the residence, the man locked them out of the house. The woman let the officers in, and the man became extremely agitated and started to make wild gestures. He yelled, “you can’t be here, you have to leave. The supreme commander has still got all my power.” The officer tried to calm the man down and assure him that they were trying to help, but he refused to obey. He began to walk toward the kitchen and, fearing he would grab a knife, the officers tried to take him down. He struggled and the officer had to use a taser to subdue him.

Even after he was handcuffed, he continued to struggle and scream about the supreme commander and lasers.

He was involuntary committed to a mental hospital for evaluation.
