Sept. 22

Sumner Police responded to the 5200 block of Sumner-Tapps Highway for a report of a one-car vehicle collision. When officers arrived to the scene, they checked the car for injured people, but found no one. However, the engine was still hot.

The silver Hyundai failed to negotiate a left curve when traveling north on Sumner-Tapps Highway and struck a guardrail. It drove underneath it and went down a small hillside, into a tree. The vehicle suffered significant damage and it was highly likely that the occupants were injured.

Officers did an area check and both northbound lanes had to be closed to get the vehicle off the roadway. An officer found a female nearby who admitted to driving the vehicle. She had a suspended license and tried to walk home after the collision. She was charged with hit and run property damage and driving with a suspended license in the first degree. She also was cited for no proof of insurance.

The owner of the vehicle was contacted. He said he did not give the woman permission to use the vehicle. His vehicle was with his brother in law, and she took the keys from the vehicle while he was at work. He wanted to pursue charges against her.

Malicious Mischief

10:45pm: A woman at a residence on Bock Ave. reported that a friend of hers had just broken out her back window and fled in an unknown direction.

She said she only knew the man for only a short time and was in Tacoma for an appointment when she ran across him. She found him to be “down on his luck.” She told him he could stay at her place for one night, and there were no problems. They had never had any type of relationship, she said. Only friends.

She said that the next day, the man was behaving oddly and seemed like he wanted to be intimate with her. She asked him to leave around noon, and he did. Then, she said he showed up later at her front door and wanted to stay the night. She said no and he banged on the front door a couple of times. Seconds later, she heard him at the back door, wanting in. She called the police and he fled through the backyard. She said he sometimes carries a gun but she didn’t see one on him that day.

The two glass panels on the door were broken out and there were fresh blood droplets on the floor outside, where the suspect seemed to have cut himself on the glass.

After taking the report, one of the officers called out for his partner and pointed to some bushes and trees on the south side of the Columbia Bank parking lot, directly across from the residence. The man was hiding in the bushes. He had cuts on his right hand around the knuckles and forearms. He was unstable on his feet and smelled of intoxicants when he spoke.

He said he had come from Lakewood to check on his child, and that he has a girlfriend who lives nearby who was supposed to have the child, but somehow he never got there. He then told police he tripped and fell, cutting his hand. He changed his story again and said he accidentally broke a window and was trying to fix it when he cut himself. Then he told police he got pushed by the woman and fell through a window.

When officers started to take photos of his injuries, he asked them to just shoot him. The officers said they were not going to shoot him, and the man replied, “figures.”

No weapons were located and East Pierce Fire and Rescue responded to help clean him up from his injuries. He was cited for malicious mischief for breaking the window and was booked without incident at Puyallup Jail.

Sept. 26

Telephone Scam

1:21pm: A resident came to the Sumner Police Department to report receiving harassing phone calls related to a scam. The man said the calls started the night before, at 6pm.

He said that the caller claimed that he had won money through the Publisher’s Clearing House Sweepstakes and told the man to get a $500 Moneyback card and provide the number of the card to the caller in order to receive the prize. The man received additional calls the following day from the same caller and was told the man he could get in trouble if he did not pay the $500.

The numbers were tracked to area codes in Jamaica and Las Vegas. The man was willing to drop the issue if the calls stopped, and the officer advised him to call back if he was contacted again.

Issues with Juvenile

12:38pm: Police arrived at a residence on Valley Ave. for an issue regarding a juvenile. A woman said she was sleeping when her 15 year-old daughter took her vehicle keys and car without permission. She said her husband rode up on his bicycle and saw the girl taking the vehicle, and he threw his bike behind the SUV and knocked on the window before she could leave. He got the keys and called the police.

The officers were familiar with the teenager and had charged her for taking the vehicle before, but charges were never filed because the girl was supposed to move to New York to live with her father. She came back to Washington within a month of moving there and is not enrolled at school because she was suspended for taking narcotics.

The girl told police she was bored and wanted to take the car. She knew she didn’t have a license or permit. She was defiant and had an attitude with the officers – she kept rolling her eyes. She told the officer that she didn’t care and she could do whatever she wanted. The officer asked her to stand up and she said no, then she had to be put in handcuffs and was escorted outside while screaming and yelling. She was charged with taking a motor vehicle without permission and was transported to Remann Hall.
