Sumner Police: Three Suspects Sought in Armed Robbery, Man Assaults Acquaintance with Baseball Bat, and DUI Driver Hits Fence Twice

The following information from June 7 to June 12 was provided by the Sumner Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

June 7, 2013

Collision and DUI: Police arrested a man for DUI and hit and run to unattended property after responding to the 200 block of Valley Avenue at 11:27 p.m. Witnesses said he was driving recklessly along the 1900 block of Gault Street and hit a fence twice.  When his vehicle became stuck, he attempted to flee on foot before officers were able to detain him nearby. He was also cited for second-degree negligent driving and expired vehicle registration.

Armed Robbery:  Police responded to the 5600 block of West Valley Highway at 9:18 p.m. for a report that a man had been robbed. The victim said he was walking northbound in that area when three men approached him. Two asked for a cigarette, which he provided, and the third then produced a small chrome revolver with wooden grips and demanded “whatever you have in your pockets.” They then fled southbound on West Valley Highway. They were described as all about 24 years old. One was a Hispanic male, 5 feet 10 inches tall, heavy build, wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans. A second was an African American male, 5 feet 10 inches tall, medium build, full beard, tattoo on neck wearing a white T-shirt and a black ‘LA’ hat. The third was an African American male, 5 feet 10 inches tall, full beard, wearing all black clothing.

Baseball Bat Assault: Police arrested a man for second-degree assault on June 11 after an incident on June 10 on Main Street and Fryar Avenue in which he had reportedly struck another man with an aluminum bat four times, causing him to break his arm. The victim told police he didn’t instigate anything with the suspect though he may have been angry about being bitten by his dog. A witness for the suspect told police the victim had previously threatened him with a metal pipe and rope noose. The suspect himself denied having even seen the victim for several days.

Playground Attempted Theft: A citizen reported that on the day prior at Loyola Park, her son took a new cell phone he’d been gifted to the park while he played basketball. Three youths came along and tried to steal the phone out of his coat pocket. They dropped the phone and it smashed on the ground. They then fled the scene.
