Tacoma Mall Shooter Involved In Attempted Escape At Clallam Bay Prison

Dominick Maldonado, who went on a shooting rampage in the mall outside of University Place, allegedly held a guard hostage with a pair of scissors today.

CLALLAM BAY – The man who sent gunshots throughout the Tacoma Mall in 2005 was involved in an attempted escape today from his Clallam Bay prison.

Another inmate involved in the attempted escape at the Clallam Bay Corrections Center was fatally shot, according to the state Department of Corrections.

Just after 10 a.m. a correctional officer working in the industries area of the prison was taken hostage by offender Dominick Maldonado, 25, using a pair of scissors.

Maldonado is the man convicted of going on a shooting rampage the day after Thanksgiving in 2005 at the Tacoma Mall, sending hundreds of shoppers fleeing in horror.

At the same time another offender, Kevin Newland, 25, drove a forklift through the doors of the work area and drove into the perimeter fences. A correctional officer fired one shot at Newland, causing fatal injuries.

All offenders will remain in their cells while the prison is under a lockdown. The prison has accounted for all offenders. The prison will remain on lockdown while local law enforcement conducts an investigation.

The officer who was taken hostage was treated for minor injuries at a local hospital.

Maldonado is a close-custody offender serving a 163-year sentence for numerous charges related to the 2005 shooting in Tacoma. He began his prison sentence in November 2007 and is eligible for release in April 2159.

Newland was serving a 45-year sentence for first-degree murder in Spokane County. He began his prison sentence in November 2007 and would have been eligible for release in August 2049.

Clallam Bay Corrections Center is located in northwest tip of the Olympic Peninsula. The prison houses 858 medium-, close-, and maximum-custody offenders.
