Firefighters from East Pierce Fire and Rescue spent three hours looking for the driver of a truck that ended up in Lake Tapps after failing to negotiate a turn on the 20177 block of Snag Island Drive early Sunday morning. Emergency responders were called to the lake just after 1 a.m. for a report of a truck in the water. They never did find the driver.
According to East Pierce Battalion Chief Jay Adams, there was no evidence of injury inside cab of the truck. It was thought that the driver had escaped and abandoned the vehicle. However, rescuers had to be sure. The firefighters used a boat to search the area around the mid-size truck, which was found in approximately three feet of water at the end of Snag Island. Other firefighters combed the underbrush along the shore.
Divers from East Pierce Fire and Rescue and Pierce County Sheriff’s Department were used to extend a tow line to the vehicle so it could be hauled from the lake.
The Pierce County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the incident.
