Two Killed in Crash on State Route 410 in Sumner

The crash on Friday morning involved three cars on State Route 410 East near 166th Avenue East in Sumner.

Update: 9:00 p.m.

The Washington State Patrol has identified the two people killed in Friday morning's accident as 72-year-old Richard Smith, of Renton, and 41-year-old David Maynard, of Bonney Lake.

According to a WSP press memo, the 2013 Chevrolet Silverado pick up truck driven by Smith was headed eastbound on State Route 410 at about 5:45 a.m. when it crossed over the median on Ehli Hill and struck the 2002 Ford Focus driven by Maynard, who was headed westbound.

The 41-year-old driver of the large dump truck that subsequently struck both vehicles was uninjured.

The cause of the fatal collision remained under investigation Friday night.

WSP Trooper Guy Gill reported on Twitter at about noon that tow trucks were on scene and lanes should be opening shortly. Meanwhile, the WSDOT reports on its site that the left lane of both directions remained blocked.

Authorities are currently investigating a fatal crash on eastbound State Route 410 Friday morning.

One eastbound lane of State Route 410 East is blocked. Both westbound lanes are blocked, but drivers are getting by on the shoulder.

Bonney Lake Police tweeted that traffic may be affected for at least 3 to 4 hours while the investigation is underway. Possible alternate routes include Rhodes Lake Road or 214th Avenue East around Lake Tapps.

East Pierce Fire and RescueΒ responded to the scene and released the following:

Two are dead following a three-vehicle crash just before 6 a.m. Friday on State Route 410 East near 166th Avenue East in Sumner. Witnesses report a pickup crossed the barrier, hitting a car traveling in the opposite direction. A fully-loaded semi truck with trailer slammed into both vehicles.

East Pierce Fire and Rescue firefighters responded. The drivers of the pickup and car were pronounced dead at the scene.

One eastbound lane of State Route 410 East is blocked. Both westbound lanes are blocked, but drivers are getting by on the shoulder.

Washington State Patrol is investigating the cause of the crash.
