Voters Approve EMS Levy, Select Fire Commissioners

73 percent of voters were in favor of the EMS Levy and Patrick McElligott and Ed Egan will face off in the November general election.

While the primary election results will not be official until Aug. 31, the surpassed the 60 percent majority needed for approval.

“We thank our citizens for once again supporting their fire service,” said East Pierce Fire Chief Jerry E. Thorson. “Renewing the EMS levy for the next 10 years will provide a solid foundation from which we can plan for the future. As always, we will continue to be good stewards of these tax dollars.”

Also on the primary election ballot was one of the seats for East Pierce board of commissioners. and Patrick McElligott garnered top votes and will face off in the general election this Novemeber. Each garnered 34 percent of the vote. Current commissioner and board chair Rick Kuss ran unopposed and he will serve another six-year term.

Fire commissioners meet monthly to set budgets, establish policy and provide administrative oversight. The current board includes Kuss, Egan, Proulx, Kilbourn, Dale Mitchell, Raymond Bunk, Kevin Garling, Karlyne McGinnis, Mike Cathey, Roy “Red” Mendenhall and Ron Scholz.

Due to the mergers, fire commissioners were added to the East Pierce board. As terms expire, positions will not be filled until the board returns to the mandated five members required by law. Three positions are set to expire at the end of this year. Proulx and Kilbourn will not return in 2012. Mendenhall has decided that this is his final year on the board.
