Woman Loses Apartment, Belongings in Fire at Spartan Arms

East Pierce Firefighters were able to contain a Sunday morning blaze at the Spartan Arms Apartments. No one was injured but one unit was damaged.

East Pierce firefighters were called to the Spartan Arms Apartments on the 1600 block of Washington Street on Sunday morning to contain a blaze in one of the units. Members of called in the fire around 9 a.m. when they noticed it on their way to Sunday service. Smoke was billowing out of the front door, windows and under the eaves of the two-story building.

No one was home in the unit where the fire started and the cause remains unknown. East Pierce was able to contain the blaze to the single unit and evacuate the rest of the building safely. No one was injured.

"Although the firefighters were able to contain the blaze to the single unit, the estimated loss is approximately $50,000, including structure and contents," said East Pierce Deputy Fire Marshal Lane Walthers.

The American Red Cross provided temporary housing for the renter who lost her apartment and belongings in the fire.
