You're Invited to a Community Water Safety Meeting May 22

A coalition of community leaders has been engaged in developing a water safety campaign to create awareness, particularly in light of multiple drownings on Lake Tapps last year.

This post was written by Bonney Lake-Sumner Editor April Chan.

Following last year's multiple drownings on Lake Tapps, Bonney Lake Mayor Neil Johnson formed a water safety committee to develop a community-wide water safety campaign, according to East Pierce Fire and Rescue Public Education Specialist Dina Sutherland.

Several events that have already occurred (April Pools Day), are currently happening (in-school education), and coming up this summer are geared toward promoting awareness about staying safe in the water.

The next event coming up is a Community Meeting on Wednesday, May 22, which Sutherland describes as:
A community meeting to discuss water safety and drowning prevention efforts. This meeting will be widely marketed and kick-off the “Swim Safe” campaign. Featured speakers will include Mayor Johnson and Pierce County Councilman Dan Roach. Education/informational booths will be hosted by Bonney Lake Police Department, East Pierce Fire and Rescue, Sumner Bonney Lake Aquatics and other agencies.

Further into the summer, two additional events are scheduled:

  • July 27 from 1-4 p.m.: Summer Splash-Tacular at North Tapps Park.  This free event will offer a variety of hands-on activities and games revolving around open water safety.  Partnering agencies include East Pierce Fire and Rescue, Bonney Lake Police and Pierce County Sheriffs Office.
  • August 10 from 1-4 p.m.: Sumner Splash-Tacular at Allan Yorke Park.  Same details as above.
The water safety committee includes representatives from City of Bonney Lake, Bonney Lake Police, Sumner and Dieringer School Districts, Pierce County Parks, Cascade Water Alliance, Sumner Bonney Lake Aquatics, and East Pierce Fire and Rescue.
