Fryar Ave. Bridge Closes for Continuing Work on Traffic and Main

The Fryar Ave. Bridge that connects 142nd Ave. E. to Fryar Ave. will close 'as necessary' to traffic as crews continue to improve the intersection.

The city continues improvements to the Traffic Ave. and Main Street intersection and has announced plans to close the Fryar bridge, connecting 142nd Ave. E. to Fryar Ave., as crews find it ‘necessary.’

“This is needed in part because of the roadway removal and rebuild but also because large semi trailers using this route can't make the turn onto Fryar Ave. during construction,” said the City of Sumner in an e-update.

The statement advised drivers to use Tacoma Ave. and Puyallup St. to access Fryar Ave. and encourages trycks to use the 24th St. exit off SR 167, and 142nd Ave. E. to access the industrial area.

The ‘good news,’ the statement continues, is that paving the Traffic and Main intersection is ‘just around the corner’ and crews will be working on it during the evenings and at night to minimize driver impact. The ‘bad news’ is that the night paving will eliminate through traffic, only allowing local access to open businesses.

Starting the evening of Weds, March 9, the contractor will excavate the old pavement and work through the evening. This schedule should continue through Sunday evening with a tentative paving date of March 17. Weather and other circumstances may push that date back.

During the day, businesses will remain open but drivers will have to drive over gravel when passing through the intersection. Any businesses planning evening or night deliveries in the area are advised to contact Ted Hill, Sumner’s Associate City Engineer, at tedh@ci.sumner.wa.us.
