Hynek Announces Run for Mayor of Sumner

Sumner City Councilman Randy Hynek announced during reports Monday night that he intended to run for mayor this fall.

Sumner City Councilman Randy Hynek is seeking the position of mayor in this fall's election.

Hynek made the statement towards the end of a 140-plus-minute City Council meeting Monday night during Council reports.

"There needs to be changes and I can't wait to make them," he said. "I'm running for mayor - I'm done."

City Attorney Brett Vinson was quick to admonish Hynek for his statement and called it inappropriate for a city council meeting that was being broadcast. The broadcast was a use of public facilities, Vinson said, and the Public Disclosure Commission has indicated a city can't use public facilities for support or opposition of a candidate or measure. "You're absolutely prohibited from making such a comment."

The relevant state statute, according to Municipal Research and Services Center of Washington, is RCW 42.17A.555.

Both Hynek's Council position No. 2 as well as the office of mayor are up for election in November, as well as positions No. 1 and No. 3 currently held by Ed Hannus and Steve Allsop, respectively.

Candidate filing week takes place May 13Β  through May 17.

Meanwhile for all those interested in seeking office this fall, the Pierce County Auditor's Office is hosting a candidate workshop tonight, April 3, at 6 p.m. in Tacoma. RSVP is required. Click here to learn more.
