Matt Richardson Takes Unapproved Leave of Absence, Could Lose Council Seat if Unexcused

Matt Richardson was a no-show at last night's City Council meeting in Sumner and doesn't plan to be back at work until April 15. He gave no reason.

Sumner City Councilmember told his constituents he was taking a leave of absence from his civic duties, for a time period of March 1 – April 15.

He did not get permission from the council or city to take a leave of absence and gave no explanation for why he needs the time off. He delivered a letter to the City of Sumner on Monday, Feb. 28 announcing his plans, saying only that it was due to "personal and unavoidable circumstances" and he wanted to keep the matter quiet.

If Richardson doesn't show up to work and the council doesn't excuse it, his council seat will become vacant after April 4. Under RCW 35A.12.060, a council position becomes vacant if the person is absent for three consecutive meetings without council consent.

City Administrator Diane Supler said that she didn't believe anyone from the city had contacted Richardson regarding the nature of his leave.

The City Council was scheduled to have a special meeting last night to discuss whether or not he should be reprimanded or if they should take any action, but cancelled the meeting earlier in the day. During the regular council meeting, Councilmember Leroy Goff commented that the council should not excuse his absence unless an additional explanation was received, but that motion was not seconded by anyone at the council.
