Planning Commission Holds Off on Orton Junction Recommendation

The Pierce County Planning Commission tabled Orton Junction at their Wednesday meeting, but will take it up again after planning staff has a chance to complete its review of supplemental information provided by the city.

A decision on Sumner’s proposed Urban Growth Amendment (UGA) to accommodate the Orton Junction project has been put on hold until the Pierce County Planning Commission’s July 13 meeting.

The item had been scheduled for discussion at Wednesday’s meeting, but Planning Commission clerk Toni Fairbanks said commissioners tabled it to give themselves more time to study supplemental materials city officials provided last week.

"Staff didn't have time to prepare a response and they wanted to give it the due diligence they need to," she said.

Carmen Palmer, the city’s communications director, said city officials attended the meeting along with a representative of the YMCA, which is awaiting the proposal’s approval so it can go forward with its plans to build a new center.

“We sort of knew it was going to get tabled,” Palmer said.  “Their legal counsel is on vacation and they’re trying to coordinate schedules. It’s all just kind of in a holding pattern right now.”

The July 13 meeting will be held at 7 p.m. in the Pierce County Annex, 2401 S. 35th Street in Tacoma.
