Proposition 1 Fails in Feb. 8 Special Election

Proposition 1 failed to gain traction in Pierce County and was rejected by 54 percent of voters.

The final election results posted on Feb. 23 from the special election on Feb. 8 showed that Proposition 1 failed, with slightly more than half of the voters saying no to an increased sales tax of 0.3 percent that would keep Pierce Transit at its current level of operation. It was rejected by 73,914 voters, or 54.27 percent, and approved by 62,290 voters (45.73 percent).

Now that the measure has failed, Pierce Transit plans to move forward with the following cuts:

  • 35 percent service level reduction projected
  • Reduced a.m./p.m. trips on fixed route and reduced SHUTTLE trips
  • Buses come less frequently
  • Reduced weekend service
  • No special event service, such as the Puyallup Fair and July 4th Freedom Fair
  • Implementation at current 0.6 percent local sales tax funding level

Pierce Transit held public meetings in support of Proposition 1 in Sumner with and the Bonney Lake city council on Jan. 25.
