Should Bonney Lake Keep its Dog Park?

Viking Park in Bonney Lake is approaching the end of it's trial run and the Bonney Lake city council will discuss its location and future by the end of this year. Do you think the park is popular enough to become a permanent local fixture?

In September of last year, Bonney Lake launched , a grand experiment to meet the growing demands of its four-legged population. The park was created on a trial-basis and its permanence would be reassessed after some time.

Almost a year later, the city still hasn’t made a final decision on Viking Park and local groups, like the Park Board, are beginning to wonder what will happen to the favorite canine hangout – and if there is opportunity for any new locations.

“We would like to see another park put in, either in Midtown, Eastown or on the Reed Property, wherever the city and council think would be the best,” said Bonney Lake Park Board member Fred Jacobsen, who addressed the city council on the issue at the regular Aug. 9 meeting.

Mayor Neil Johnson said that the council does not have immediate plans to determine the park's future, but that he believed it would come up during the mid-biennial budget amendment, which will occur around October or November of this year.

“There hasn’t been a recommendation sent to council yet concerning the park,” said Johnson. “The question is, should we expand the current park, or look at another site? From an administration side, we haven’t made a decision yet and need to get thoughts and feedback [on the issue.]”
