Stick It to Hunger and Beat Puyallup in the Sumner Peanut Butter Drive

The trash talk is already heating up in the Stick it To Hunger Peanut Butter Drive, pitting Sumner against Puyallup.

Did you know that peanut butter is the most requested item at food banks?

In East Pierce, heightened need breeds friendly competition – Puyallup has challenged Sumner to a peanut butter drive called Stick It To Hunger, April 30 through May 11.

The goal is to collect 4,000 jars of peanut butter across the two cities.

It’s not the first peanut butter drive in the area’s history but it’s certainly the biggest – the tradition began in 2010 when two city employees attended the Puyallup/Sumner Chamber of Commerce Leadership Institute and were inspired to start a drive. In one week, Puyallup city employees donated 1,025 jars of peanut butter. Last year’s drive included jelly and over two weeks, over 2,500 jars of the staple sandwich items were collected.

When it came time to start ramping up efforts this year, organizers thought, why not include Sumner? So this year, the goal has been upped to 4,000 jars and the race is on. The winning city gets a PB trophy and the trash talk is just beginning.

Sumner Police Chief/acting City Administrator John Galle purchased all the peanut butter from the Puyallup Fred Meyer before the contest even started. In a video address, Mayor Dave Enslow points out that someone named C.H. Sumner introduced peanut butter to America back in 1904.

“I think that’s quite telling as to who is destined to win!” said Enslow.
