Old Sumner-Buckley Highway Will be Renamed to Honor Veterans

The Bonney Lake city council voted 4-2 to change the name of Old Sumner-Buckley Highway to Veterans Memorial Drive East at the Nov. 22 council meeting.

When the Bonney Lake City Council decided to finally vote on renaming part of Old Sumner-Buckley Highway at their Nov. 22 council meeting, there was no debate or comment.

In 30 days, Old Sumner-Buckley Highway will be renamed to Veterans Memorial Drive East. City costs to change road signs would be "minimal," according to today's article in the Bonney Lake-Sumner Courier Herald.

The council voted 4-2 to pass the ordinance, with Laurie Carter and Dan Decker holiding the dissenting votes. Jim Rackley was absent due to illness.

The idea was brought before council by Mark Hamilton, who expressed his desire to honor local veterans in a permanent way. The historic road should be renamed to also honor Bonney Lake's status as a growing city, he said in previous meetings. Hamilton hoped to approve the street name change before Veteran's Day. However, tabeled the topic in September.
