Sumner Invites Residents to Apply for City Council Position

Sumner residents eligible to vote who have a passion for local issues are encouraged to apply for a temporary position with the City Council.

The Sumner City Council is to fill a vacant seat, formally held by .

The term would begin after a council majority votes the person into office. The position will expire after the results of the general election, to be held Nov. 8.

The seven-person council is the legislative body of the city, under Mayor Dave Enslow. The council sets local policy, adopts an annual budget and determines services provided to Sumner residents. Council members also serve on multiple sub-committees and are responsible for appointing commission board members and determine funding levels for different local needs.

Council members devote a minimum commitment of 18-20 hours per week with a monthly stipend of $750. Qualified applicants are Sumner residents for at least one year and must be a registered voter.

Applicants must turn in a one-page cover letter indicating interest and general qualifications, a resume and answers to the following questions:

  1. Why do you want to serve on the City Council?
  2. What experiences, talents or skills do you bring to the Council and community that you would like to highlight?
  3. Are there any regional issues or forums in which you have a particular interest or expertise? (e.g. transportation, water supply, human services, water quality, fiscal management, solid waste, parks & open space, etc.)

All applications must be received no later than 12 p.m. on April 8, 2011. The council will begin reviewing candidates on April 11, and the council will cast their votes on April 18 and swear in a new council member.
