Sumner Public Hearing Tonight: Thoughts on the Loss of Pierce Transit, Private Off-Street Parking Lots

Let your voice be heard tonight at the Sumner City Council public hearing on the loss of Pierce Transit and city code regarding off-street parking lots.

At the last regular Sumner city council meeting, councilwoman Nancy Dumas requested an opportunity to hear from residents the impact the loss of will have on their lives.

Sumner and Bonney Lake were voted out of the transit district by the Boundary Review Hearing Board last month.Β

Dumas wanted to give residents the opportunity to let the city council know their thoughts on the loss of transportation, but no action will be taken.

The council will also hear testimony tonight on an ordinance that would temporarily prohibit using private lots for truck parking. An "off-street parking lot," by definition, would provide parking for non-commercial vehicles in town, but not for trucks, freight and animals. If approved, the definition would be in code for the next 6 months. The reason for the ordinance is that, while truck parking is allowed in the commercial district, there is no language in the municipal code that prohibits them from parking in lots in-town.

Check out the rest of the agenda, which is posted on this article.

Editor's Note: the original content in this story was wrong, regarding Pierce Transit. Both Bonney Lake and Sumner were voted out of the transit boundaries last month, so neither is part of Pierce Transit any longer. Councilmember Dumas recommended a public hearing to get community feedback on the decision. We will have a followup story soon, stay tuned.
